Suffragetto - Board and Pieces

Description

I made a version of the 'Suffragetto' game for my sister's birthday.

The board is comprised of chalkwashed and varnished 1" beech squares, set in a pine frame; I made two sets of playing pieces, one using HO scale Edwardian figures and the other (for more regular use) from repainted chess pieces (pawns and bishops).

The original game dates from the early 20th century (I've found references to publication dates of 1908/9, 1912 and 1917): 'Suffragetto is a contest of occupation between two opposing factions, the Suffragettes and the Police. The goal of the Suffragettes is to break past Police lines and enter the House of Commons. At the same time, The Suffragettes must also prevent the Police from entering the Royal Albert Hall, an oft-used meeting space of the Women’s Social and Political Union. It is the Police’s duty to break up a meeting of the Suffragettes, currently being held in the Royal Albert Hall, all the while, preventing the Suffragettes from entering the House of Commons ... Police may arrest Suffragettes; Suffragettes may disable Police through jiu jitsu.'

The playing pieces can be seen in a little more detail here, and the box and carrying bag for the components here.
